Assistant Director

Policy for Selection of Assistant Conductor

An individual interested in holding the position of Assistant Conductor for the Virginia Beach Chorale shall submit a résumé of pertinent employment, education, accomplishments, previous positions, etc.

Upon approval of acceptance, the individual shall serve a minimum of one (1) full concert season (fall and spring) as “Intern Director” and will meet regularly with the Artistic Director to review progression within the position. The Intern Director will also work with the complete Music Team to ensure a satisfactory level of collegiality, cooperation, and collaboration. At the completion of the intern period, the Music Team will meet to discuss the options of advancing the individual into the position of Assistant Director or remaining in the position of Intern Director. The position of Assistant Director shall be a one-year term, with the possibility of renewal for additional one-year terms, if recommended by the Music Team. The Virginia Beach Chorale Board of Directors will have the final approval, based on the recommendation of the Music Team. The option does exist for multiple intern/assistant directors.

 

Assistant Director Position Description 

The Assistant Director position is non-salaried, though recompense may be offered if the financial status of the organization allows. The Assistant Director will work under, and in collaboration with, the Artistic Director in preparing the Chorale for each planned performance. At the Artistic Director’s discretion, the Assistant Director may conduct 1-2 songs on each major performance. The Assistant Conductor must be a full-time, active member of the Chorale and will serve as a member of the Music Team.

 

The Assistant Director of the Virginia Beach Chorale:

  1. shall be degreed in music, in the fields of either choral conducting, choral/vocal performance, or choral music education,

  2. shall display a competent understanding of fundamental choral technique, the use of sound and appropriate choral conducting technique, an understanding of the historic and stylistic interpretation of choral music, and a concrete grasp of music history and music theory,

  3. shall exhibit elements of professional, pragmatic, musical, and empathetic leadership skills,

  4. shall display elements of the ability to be cooperative and collaborative as part of the music team, and

  5. shall display elements of professionalism and responsibility with regard to rehearsal and performance attendance, punctuality, and preparation of all repertoire for each performance.
